An excerpt from chapter 16:

A Genuine Cop Car

… When the auctioneer finally reached the second cop car, a city employee informed the auctioneer that the car wasn’t in running order. But he was told to try to start it anyway. The grinding noise that came from under the hood made the audience cringe. “Just a little repair work and this baby will be running like new” the auctioneer exclaimed as he started the bidding at $750 trying to get a $1000. There were no takers, so he dropped the bid to $500. Still no bids. Finally, he cried out $250 several times. I was afraid the city might “no sale” the car so I raised my hand. The auctioneer tried repeatedly to get a $300 bid and then suddenly yelled “SOLD!” I had just purchased my first police car…
